The Law of Attraction: You Don’t Get What You Want —You Get What You Are

This is the most well-know of the Universal Laws

It’s been mainstream for decades now (thanks, The Secret), and it’s often hyped as the magic key to manifesting the dream job, the perfect relationship, or your future lake house.

And while there’s truth in it —there’s also a lot of confusion.

What is like unto itself is drawn: What is the Law of Attraction?

The Law of Attraction builds off the Law of Vibration, which says that everything in existence vibrates at a certain frequency—including you, me, your thoughts, your feelings, and your late-night craving for pizza.

The Law of Attraction says that vibrations at the same frequency are drawn to each other.

Think of it like tuning into a radio station. If you’re broadcasting on 98.5 FM but trying to receive from 104.3 FM, you’re not going to hear what’s playing there—no matter how much you want to.

This is the difference between wanting something and being aligned with it.

If you’re thinking high-vibe thoughts—like gratitude, joy, love, curiosity—you’ll tend to attract experiences that reflect those vibrations.
But if you’re steeped in frustration, fear, self-doubt, or scarcity? You’ll keep calling in more of the same.

Most people like to use Law of Attraction techniques to attract things into their life: a partner, a better job, more money, etc. This is sometimes successful, but often times not. If it was, we’d all be living in our dream homes and be naturally happy with our bodies. But we’re not.

There are many reasons that people don’t find results with the traditional LOA teachings which I will get into in future posts. One reason is that they don’t realize there are 11 other laws to consider that work in conjunction with this one law. Another reason is that they are not matched to the frequency of their desire. Wanting it is not enough, you need to embody the frequency your desire.  

We get what we vibe, not what we ask for

So why doesn’t it always work?

Here’s the part most LOA content skips over: Desire alone doesn’t manifest anything. Alignment does.

We all know people who desperately want to change their circumstances: they want more money, a partner who truly sees them, and job that doesn’t make them dread Mondays.

But wanting it isn’t enough.
You have to match the frequency of what you want in order to draw it in.

Here’s an example I think a lot of us can relate to —let’s take Brad.
Brad says he wants a loving, long-term partner. But every time you talk to him, he’s venting about how all the good ones are taken, how the apps are trash, and how he’s just going to give up.

What vibe is Brad putting out?

It’s not love or abundance.
It’s frustration, lack, and resignation.

And the universe? It doesn’t hear his words —it feels his frequency.

So instead of matching him with someone grounded, open, and available… Brad keeps meeting people who ghost, breadcrumb, or emotionally check out. That’s his frequency match —whether he realizes it or not.

Feel it to attract it, but don’t fake it

You are a magnet and your experiences are manifestations of the energy that you give off- either consciously or subconsciously. Look around you and realize that you’re attracting the circumstances of the reality you’re living right now.

This doesn’t mean you need to put on a happy face and fake your way into high-vibe territory. That’s called bypassing—and the universe doesn’t buy it.

What does work is emotional honesty paired with intentional alignment.

If you’re feeling discouraged, acknowledge it.
If you’re sad, let yourself feel it.
Then ask:

What would a 1-degree shift toward a higher frequency look like right now?

Sometimes it’s a walk. A deep breath. A call with a friend. A better question. A different story.

You don’t leap from hopeless to euphoric in a day.
You pivot. Gently. Consistently. Consciously.

What you can do to practice the Law of Attraction
  • Notice your baseline vibe. How do you feel when you’re not trying to “get it right”?
  • Shift your focus. Instead of obsessing over what you lack, ask: What can I appreciate right now?
  • Align your actions. Want love? Practice loving thoughts. Want abundance? Practice generosity. Want clarity? Practice stillness.
  • Be willing to do the inner work. Your energy leads. Always.

And remember: This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being aware and making small shifts that align you with what you actually want to experience.

If you don’t like what you’re seeing in your life, it’s not about blame —it’s about awareness.

  • What energy are you giving off, consciously or unconsciously?
  • What stories are you repeating in your head that might be keeping you at a lower frequency?
  • Where might you be asking for something… while simultaneously doubting you deserve it?
